Is a heat pump the most efficient option for your home?

Until recently, heat pumps were only recommended in mild climates where a moderate amount of heating is required. Older heat pump models struggled to pull heat in very cold temperatures, making them more expensive to run than a furnace or boiler. Newer cold-climate heat pumps, which have been on the market since 2010, can operate economically down to 5°F or below. Cold climate units can fully meet the heating load on all but the coldest days or the year. The most advanced heat pumps can still provide some heating efficiency at temperatures as cold as -20°F. If you live in MA or in the North East, ensure your ducted heat pump or ductless mini split heat pump is a cold-climate model.

What is the lifespan of a heat pump?

The typical lifespan of a heat pump is anywhere from 12-20 years, depending on how well you maintain it. Because heat pumps produce both heating and cooling, they tend to wear out faster than dedicated heating and cooling appliances like a furnace, boiler or AC.
